Lakewood Elementary School is here to serve the students and parents in the community. The staff has made a commitment to assure every student will reach his/her academic, emotional, and physical potential.
We believe:
(a) with a solid academic foundation our students will become responsible citizens

We are committed to:
1. Helping our students develop their mental abilities by offering special programs such as:
• Computer Lab
• Grouping in reading and other subject areas to meet individual needs
2. Providing a curriculum that includes worthwhile teaming experiences and activities, which provide for the under achiever as well as the accelerated and the average student, so that each will be prepared to make a living and make a worthwhile contribution to society.
3. Maintaining a well rounded academic standard for our students through the use of well trained personnel.

Campus Overview |

Lakewood Elementary School was built in 1962 on four and one half acres of scenic property located on the southeast edge of the North Forest Independent School District.
The campus was recently modernized with the addition of the SPARK Park complete with amphitheater and a quarter mile jogging trail.
Within the original school structure there are thirty seven classrooms, in 1994-95, an eighteen classroom annex was added to provide housing for one thousand ten students. Then, in 2005, a twelve-classroom portable building was built to provide housing for increasing enrollment in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The staff consists of one principal, one assistant principal, two instructional specialists and fifty three teachers. There is one Fine Arts teacher, two PE teachers, one Music teacher, and three Special Education teachers Additional support staff includes two guidance counselors, one nurse, one librarian, thirteen paraprofessionals, six custodians, and cafeteria staff. Parent volunteers are an integral part of our educational program.
The business community, including the greater Houston area and the churches in our attendance area provide us with needed support.
Our focus is on children, directing their experiences and preparing each one to develop academic and behavioral skills, which will enable them to achieve excellence in performance. |

The number of students enrolled at Lakewood was 795 as of April 2006. The ethnicity of Lakewood’s population is: Hispanic 57%, Black 42%, and other 1%. The socio-economic indicators include the free lunch program, which serves 821 students. Generic exceptional education serves 20 students and English as a Second Language(ESL) serves 300 of our students with limited English proficiencies.
The number of teachers is 53, which constitutes 67% of the total staff at Lakewood. There are 5 professional support staffers, which represents 5% and 2 campus administrators, which is 2% of the professional staff. Educational paraprofessionals make up 18% of the staff and custodians and cafeteria the remaining 8%.
The staff categorized by ethnicity and sex includes 6 African American males, 39 African American females, 6 Hispanic females, 3 Asian American females, 1 Asian American male, 15 Asian females, and 1 White male.
The number of Gifted and Talented Education teachers is 6. The number of Exceptional Education teachers includes 2 generic and 1 resource. The total number of English as a Second Language (ESL) is 12. Finally, there is one principal, one assistant principal, two counselors, one librarian, one nurse, one Reading coach, one Math coach, and one Science coordinator.

Campus Performance |

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) in grades K-2 and Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAKS) in grades 3-5 are used to measure student achievement (statistics reflects 2004–2005 scores). Based on the figures complied from the ITBS test, Lakewood students achieved the grade level equivalent in reading, language, and mathematics.
Lakewood students made significant progress in the area of performance gains for the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 TAKS testing periods. Lakewood Elementary has been awarded its Recognized Status for the past 2 consecutive years 2004 and 2005 by the Texas Education Agency. Currently, Lakewood Elementary has received its Governor’s Excellence Award for being as one of the top 100 performing schools in the state of Texas. With these, Lakewood Elementary has received its Recognized Status for 2 consecutive school years.
For the 2004-2005 school year TAKS test, 95% of the third grade students met minimum expectations on all test taken.
Additionally, 89% of the third graders met minimum expectations in Mathematics. Lakewood fourth grade students scored 94% in Reading, 94% in Mathematics, and 97% in Writing.
With this result, Lakewood Elementary has been awarded by the Texas Education Agency a Recognized Status for the year 2005.
