The role of the school nurse is to support each student’s academic education. This is accomplished by the implementation of various strategies that contribute to students’ and staff wellness. The nurse serves as the administrator of all school programs in the following manner:

. Health Services – Functioning as the manager of the health services
program and provides optimal nursing care.
. Health Education – Provides health education to students, parents. Staff
and the community.
. Healthy Environment – Indicates health and/or safety concerns in the
school setting to enhance the learning environment.
. Nutritional Services – Supports nourishing food service programs.
. Physical Fitness – Supports healthy physical education guidelines.
. Counseling – Health and Hygiene counseling, Assessment of mental
health needs with provision of interventions. Referral source for students
to appropriate school staff and/or community agencies.
. Parental/Community Involvement – Serves as school liaison in be-
tween the school and the community. Also provides Nursing skills, knowledge and recommendations - when needed. Serving as a health care provider/liaison.
. Staff Wellness – Provides Health education, guidance and services to the
faculty and staff.


MINIMUM STATE REQUIREMENTS for TEXAS SCHOOL ENTRANCE/ATTENDANCE

This is a summary of the vaccine requirements incorporated in Title 25 Health Services – Section 97.61-97.72 of the Texas Administrative Code.

1. DTP/DtaP/DT/TD – 3 doses of any combination – (Pertussis vaccine is not re-
quired).
1 dose of Td required ten years after last dose of DTP/DTaP
DT
2. POL (IPV) - 4 doses unless the 3rd dose was on or after 4th birthday.
3. MMR - 2 doses with the 1st dose on or after the 1st birthday. 2nd
dose by age 5 or entry into Kindergarten
4. Hepatitis B - 3 doses
5. Varicella - 1 dose on or after 1st birthday. 2 doses if vaccine given at
13 years of age or older.
6. TB Skin Test - All students entering the district for the first time or re-en
try after a year lapse (School year) . Students must present
evidence of TB testing and reading within one year,

EXEMPTIONS: The law allows (a) physicians to write a statement, stating
Vaccines required would be harmful or injurious to the
Health and well being of the child and ( b ) Parent/Guard
-ian to choose an exemption from immunization require-
-ments for reasons of conscience, including a religious
belief. The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect
an exemption simply because of inconvenience.
